There are such a large number of energizing things happening at this time of the year and one would cherish to invest energy with family and friends. However, when you think of how fortunate you are or have been in your life, there is that warm feeling that makes you want to have a positive impact on another person. There are a number of disadvantaged groups in our society, this means you have a wide choice of people you would want to give back to.
Here are five ways you can give back to the society this season:
1. Collect donations for a food bank.
Food banks distribute food to families and various organizations that serve people in need. A charitable activity that your family and friends can rally around is collecting items from the community for a local food bank. You can facilitate your own food drive or gather cash and food donations to contribute to a food drive run by another organization. Food banks look for nutritious nonperishable items, such as whole grain foods and low-sodium canned meats.
2. Donate toys to make a child’s day
Kids in low-income families often go without during the holidays. Help make sure every child in your community receives a gift this season by donating toys and clothes to charities or thrift stores in your area. Parents on tight budgets may be doing some of their holiday shopping at secondhand stores, and charities that collect toys will surely be distributing them during the holidays. You’ll prevent unwanted toys from going to waste and just may make a child’s holiday a little more special.
3. Love Your Neighbor
So often, we don’t really even know our neighbors. It’s usually laid on my heart to love on my neighbors especially around this time of year. They don’t even have to be physical neighbors that live in your area, but they might just be people who you see everyday or every other day but you never really interact.
Bake them a loaf of your famous pumpkin bread, rake their leaves, or offer to watch the kids while they go out shopping. There are so many little things you can do just to bless your neighbors.
4. Assemble a group of friends to sponsor a family.
Another way to give back
is sponsoring or adopting one family for the holiday. Local religious and charitable groups will gather personal information from families who need sponsorship, including their clothing sizes and holiday wish lists. Then you can choose one of the families to sponsor. Adopting a family is a charitable activity that may cost a little more than some of the other ideas on this list, but don't rule it out. You can always get a group of people to chip in for one family.
5. Donate blood
Donating blood at a blood drive is a unique way to give back. If you're eligible, donating just 1 pint of blood can help save up to three lives. You never know how many lives you'll be affecting just by saving one.
Whichever way you volunteer or give back this season, it is simply the demonstration of helping out others that matters. Setting aside a little opportunity to go the additional mile and guarantee that another person has an incredible season can light up your own.
May your days be cheerful, brilliant, and brimming with thoughtfulness towards others this season.
